What To Expect From Genesis Detox Of Brooklyn

Drug Detox Center

We do an onsite 12 Panel Urine Drug and Breathalyzer on all patients seeking admission to our detox. For those seeking admission for Alcohol Detox either, primary or secondary, an onsite ETG screen will be done. The ETG can detect alcohol within the system back to 80 hours. If needed, we also have an onsite test for Fentanyl use.

We do not accept patients with severe underlying medical, those presenting with acute psychiatric symptoms or persons with a history of seizures (within the last 6 months) while in withdrawal.
Ex: Stroke, Uncontrolled Diabetes / hypertension

These persons should be referred to a Hospital based detox.

We utilize Methadone, Subutex (rarely) or Suboxone for Opioid Dependence, Librium or Valium for Alcohol Dependence and Valium or Ativan for Benzodiazepine Dependence.

We will induct and stabilize on Suboxone with a prescription for continued maintenance (days of medication based on level of care referred to).

We offer Naltrexone or Campral on the 4th day for those dependent on alcohol only) with up to 30 days of medication upon discharge.

Family Counseling Program

We also check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP-ISTOP) if a patient has been recently prescribed a controlled substance they must bring that substance with them.

If they are seeking detox from that substance they must sign a consent to speak with the prescriber and that prescriber will be informed that we are detoxing their patient from the medication.

Our Medical Director requests the prescribed medication be brought in because if we detox from Opioids (for example) we want to (to the best of our ability) prevent them going home and starting use again. We also understand that medication particularly Xanax is diverted to assist with payment for other substances.

We know that even if we contact the prescribing Physician that does not always prevent them from prescribing again. By NYS Law if we take a prescribed medication from a patient and upon discharge they ask for it back we MUST return it, most often they don’t ask and we don’t offer.

We check PSYCKES for those who have Medicaid or Managed Medicaid. If a person has been in numerous other detoxes or ER’s recently we may not accept them because their insurance will deny the claim for Medical Necessity. We try to the best of our ability not to be a “revolving door” facility.

We do encourage that family/friends be involved with our patient’s treatment and ask that they sign a consent for that involvement. Some patients are required based on verbal contract made prior to the intake process. IN GENERAL, WE DO NOT DENY ADMISSION IF THE PATIENT REFUSES TO SIGN CONSENT, IF A VERBAL CONTRACT WAS MADE PRIOR TO INTAKE THEN WE MAY REFUSE ADMISSION.

We let all patients know after a phone screening and/or intake that the final admission decision is made by the MD or NP.

We do not detox from Cocaine, Marijuana, Amphetamines or Barbiturates. We do not detox a person who is involved in a Methadone/Suboxone maintenance from Heroin or any other opioid.

We also understand that each patient is unique and every case is different. WE always have access to the MD or NP to discuss any circumstances that may “override” general protocols as written above.

We accept patients who need detox from Opioids, Alcohol and Benzodiazepines.
